Building Self-Reliance
We train households and schools to grow their own vegetables in backyard plots, raised beds, or simple bucket gardens where space and water are limited.
Every garden we start is paired with a seed bank so households can save and share seed season after season, and with water-wise techniques suited to South Africa's climate.
Community gardens cost more to establish than a food parcel, and their impact grows gradually, but they deliver what a parcel can't: households that no longer depend on us to eat.
How It Works
- We supply a starter kit: seed, tools, and a simple planting guide.
- Households and schools are trained in water-wise, low-input growing methods.
- A community seed bank lets growers save and exchange seed each season.
- Field visits from our team support each garden through its first harvest.
Who It Helps
Households wanting to grow their own food, and schools building gardens that also teach children where food comes from.
